The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) is a statutory body set up under the Chartered Accountants Ac, 1949 (Act No. XXXVIII of 1949) enacted by the Parliament of India to impart education, training and regulate the Chartered Accountancy profession.
The Institute has its headquarters at New Delhi with 5 Regional Office At Mumbai, Chennai, Kanpur, Kolkata and New Delhi and 124 branches spread all over the country. It has also set up 20 Chapters outside India and has opened its offices in Dubai & England as well. The Institute is proud to have more than 1,60,000 CA Professionals at its roll. Some twenty two years ago a heterogeneous group of some thirty odd people, some as young as early twenties and some as experienced as late fifties, got together under the leadership of Late CA. U. Narain.
The common thread binding this group was that all of them were Chartered Accountants. Under the leadership of Late CA. U. Narain was born the Ranchi Branch of the CIRC of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India. ICAI President CA. R. Balakrishnan inaugurated the Ranchi Branch on 16th May, 1987. This was 58th Branch of the Institute and the 15th Branch in the Central India Region at that time. The membership strength in 1987 was only 53. The phenomenal growth of the profession in the last decade has resulted in more than 400 members and more than 5000 CA Students being registered with the Branch.
Day by day Ranchi Branch of the Institute of Chartered Accountants is reaching new heights. The Ranchi Branch under its aegis conducted various National and Regional level programme for its members and students. Two President of the ICAI have visited Ranchi since 1987. Based on the activities and performance the Ranchi Branch has been awarded the following three awards in the last 2 years:
- “2nd Best Branch Award” in the Central India Region in 2006
- “Best Commendation Certificate” at the all India level awarded by the Central Council in 2007
- “Best Branch Award” in the Central India Region in 2007
- CIRC Commendation Award – 2009

Out of four hundred members of Ranchi Branch around 200 members is in Practices and more than 200 members in Service in various organizations like CCL, CMPDI, MECON, SAIL, BPCA, HLL, E&Y, PWC etc. Some members are aboard of India in Dubai, USA, United State, China etc.
Ranchi Branch of ICAI
In time with the practice of presenting a pre-budget memorandum to the Finance Minister, Govt. of Jharkhand, by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India, the Central Council of the ICAI has for the first time constitute the State Level Public Finance Committee for the State of Jharkhand with the Ranchi Branch Chairman CA. R. N. Sur as its Chairman cum Convenor. The other members of this committee are Mr. R. N. Mishra, GM, RBI, CA. M. K. Jain, Vice Chairman, Ranchi Branch, CA. J. P. Sharma, Secretary, Ranchi Branch, CA. N. K. Jain, Chairman, Jamshedpur Branch, CA. L. K. Jhunjhunwalla, Chairman, Dhanbad Branch and Ms. Gargi Aggarwal De, IIM(A), Social Educational Worker, Jamshedpur. The committee, in its first meeting decided the help the Jharkhand Govt. in the formulation of policies of select Govt. Departments, in the formation of the State Budget, helping in better utilization of Funds through end user certificates help in more systemic book keeping and accounting by some State Govt. Departments and local bodies. It also decided to advice the Govt. on W-governance initiative to be undertake in public utility services.
Chairman of Public Finance Committee of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India, Delhi CA. Subodh Kumar Agrawal alongwith Ranchi Branch Chairman CA. R. N. Sur, Secretary CA. J. P. Sharma and Member CA. Anup Banka meet Hon’ble Chief Minister, Jharkhand Sri Madhu Koda on 13th August 2008 with a view to offer the State Govt. free consultancy on the issues of Public Finance which it is giving free to all the state, Local and Central Government as a measure of its service to the society.
The Branch has also constituted a Research Committee under its aegis to conduct research on :
- Scope of profession in other Countries like Australia and it was also decided that it would before further out how that research can be conducted in collaboration with Australian Accounting bodies on topics of international relevant.
